School runs, seven-seaters and the Citroën service in Wallington
Drop-off and pick-up around Wallington's schools fill the side roads off Boundary Road and Park Lane with parked cars twice a day, and a lot of the vehicles doing that run are Grand C4 Picassos and Berlingos. They are ideal family cars, but a two-mile school run is hard on them. On a diesel, the particulate filter rarely gets hot enough to regenerate. On a PureTech petrol, the oil never quite drives off its moisture and fuel, which is bad news for a timing belt that runs in it.
At a service, we read DPF soot levels on diesels and, on older HDi models, check the Eolys additive level. On PureTech engines we gauge the belt, check oil condition and consumption, and confirm the current replacement interval for your engine. First-generation Grand C4 Picassos also get their electric parking brake checked, as motor and control unit faults are well known, and nobody wants a parking brake faulty message outside the school gate.
If the family car also does a weekend trip out of town, that longer run helps both the DPF and the oil. If it does not, we will say so honestly and suggest what helps, from a regular longer drive to changing the oil at shorter intervals. A car that does all its miles between home, Wallington Square and the school gate needs a slightly different approach from one that commutes on the A232.
Because we are so close, dropping the car off after the morning run and collecting it before pick-up usually works, as most services take 1.5–3 hours. Every job beyond the service is quoted in writing first, and repairs carry a 3-month workmanship warranty. If that timing is tight, collection and delivery can be arranged, and the walk from Beddington Park to Hackbridge is pleasant enough on a dry day.
