Battery testing — not all flat batteries need replacing
A battery that has gone flat once may just need a full charge. A battery that goes flat repeatedly is failing. We test batteries using a conductance tester that measures internal resistance and cold cranking amps — this tells us definitively whether the battery can still hold charge. This 2-minute test prevents unnecessary replacement.
AGM and EFB batteries
Most vehicles with stop-start systems require an AGM or EFB battery. Fitting a standard battery causes rapid failure — the stop-start system discharges and recharges far more frequently than a standard battery can handle. We always fit the correct technology. AGM batteries cost more but last significantly longer on stop-start vehicles.
Alternator testing and replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers all electrical systems while the engine runs. A failing alternator causes the battery to discharge and the battery warning light to illuminate. We test output voltage and charging curve before recommending replacement. A correctly functioning alternator produces 13.8–14.4 volts at the battery terminals.
Starter motor faults
Common symptoms: single click when turning the key, slow cranking, intermittent non-start, grinding noise on start. The cause can be the motor, solenoid, battery, ignition switch, relay, or wiring. We diagnose the cause before recommending parts.
Electrical fault finding — battery drain
A parasitic battery drain is a current draw that continues after the vehicle is locked. We use a clamp meter to measure total current draw, then systematically isolate circuits by pulling fuses until the drain is identified.
