What is a wheel bearing and how does it fail?
Wheel bearings allow the wheel to rotate around the hub with minimal friction. Modern cars use sealed hub bearing assemblies pressed into the hub carrier. Over time, the bearing races and balls wear, and the sealed grease becomes contaminated. The bearing develops play and produces noise that changes character when you steer left or right.
Diagnosing a wheel bearing
The classic noise is a humming or grinding that increases with speed. Steering right loads the left bearing — if the noise reduces when steering right, the left bearing is failing. Play in the wheel when rocked side to side is a more advanced sign.
MOT implications
Wheel bearing play is checked at MOT. Excessive play causes MOT failure. We advise replacement before the MOT rather than after failure.
