What is a cambelt and what does it do?
The cambelt (timing belt) is a toothed rubber belt that drives the camshaft from the crankshaft, keeping the engine's valves opening and closing in precise synchronisation with the pistons. Unlike a timing chain, a cambelt is rubber and runs dry. Rubber degrades over time regardless of mileage — it hardens, cracks, and eventually fails. Replacement is based on both time and mileage intervals.
What happens when a cambelt breaks?
On interference engines — the vast majority of modern cars — if the cambelt breaks while the engine is running, the pistons strike the open valves. Valves bend or shatter. Pistons can crack. The cylinder head is damaged. A cambelt failure can destroy a perfect engine in a fraction of a second. Repair costs £2,000–£5,000. Cambelt replacement costs £350–£600. The maths is clear.
When should the cambelt be replaced?
Every manufacturer specifies a replacement interval in both mileage and time — whichever comes first. Ford EcoBoost 1.0: 10 years or 125,000 miles. Renault 1.5 dCi: 5 years or 100,000 miles. Peugeot/Citroën diesel: 5 years or 80,000 miles. VW Group 1.6/2.0 TDI: 5 years or 100,000 miles. The time limit matters — rubber degrades with age regardless of mileage.
Water pump and tensioner — replaced at the same time
The water pump is driven by the cambelt on most engines. If it fails after a new belt has been fitted, the belt must come off again — doubling the labour. We always replace the water pump, tensioner, and idler pulleys at the same time. Parts cost is a fraction of the additional labour if replaced separately.
Which cars use a cambelt vs a timing chain?
Cambelts: VW Group 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI, Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and 1.5/2.0 EcoBlue diesel, Renault/Dacia 1.5 dCi, Toyota 1.8/2.0 diesel, Kia/Hyundai 1.0/1.2 MPI petrol, Honda 1.6 i-DTEC diesel, Peugeot/Citroën 1.5/2.0 BlueHDi diesel. Timing chains: most BMW, Mercedes, Audi (recent petrol and diesel). If unsure, call us with the registration.
