Speed humps, short hops and the Fiat 1.2 Fire belt in Morden
Across the St Helier estate, the avenues are long and straight but broken up by traffic calming and parked cars, so a Fiat spends much of its time at low speed, easing over humps and pulling away again. On a Dualogic car that means frequent clutch engagements at very low speed, the hardest job for the automated clutch. If yours has started to jerk over the humps or hesitate when pulling away from a give-way line, the clutch wear values and the hydraulic unit are the first things we look at.
Out towards Lower Morden, and along the A239 Central Road past St Lawrence Church, many Fiats are second cars doing a few thousand miles a year. The 1.2 Fire engine is tough, but its timing belt has an age limit as well as a mileage limit, and it gives no warning before it snaps. On many engines a snapped belt also damages the valves. A low-mileage Panda can pass the age limit years before the mileage limit, so we check the history carefully and quote for the belt if there is no proof.
The TwinAir engines in many 500s are sensitive in a different way. Their MultiAir inlet valve system is operated by engine oil, so an annual oil change to the Fiat 9.55535 specification matters even on a car that barely leaves Morden. Old oil is a common cause of rough running and limp mode. We note oil level at each service and top up only with the correct grade.
Everything beyond the scheduled service is quoted in writing, and our repairs are covered by a 3-month workmanship warranty. From Morden, the drive runs past Morden Hall Park to Mitcham, then south to Hackbridge, about 4 miles. If the car will not select a gear, collection and delivery can be arranged, and Saturday appointments are available.
