Hill starts in Smitham and the Dualogic clutch
Coulsdon sits on the North Downs, and even with 20mph limits on most residential roads, getting around Smitham and up towards Grange Park involves plenty of stopping and starting on slopes. In a manual Fiat you feel clutch wear as a high biting point. In a Dualogic 500, Panda or Punto, the gearbox manages the clutch for you, so wear shows differently: jerky pull-aways, a shudder on hill starts, or slipping as the revs rise without the car picking up.
When a Coulsdon Dualogic comes in, we read the clutch wear values stored by the gearbox, check the hydraulic system and fluid, and test the actuator and pump. If the clutch is worn, we fit a new kit from an OE supplier such as Valeo or LuK and then calibrate the gearbox. That calibration is essential, because without it the system does not know where the new biting point is. We finish with a road test that includes a proper hill start, so we know the car pulls away cleanly on a slope before you collect it.
The A23 relief road around the town, Farthing Way, adds a different kind of load. Its junction with Lion Green Road queues at peak times, and a queue on a gradient is the hardest possible work for an automated clutch. If you drive that way daily, it is worth having the Dualogic fluid and operation checked at each service, which we include as standard where the gearbox is fitted. Low fluid is one of the simplest faults to fix, and one of the easiest ways to damage the pump if it is left.
The drive to Hackbridge is refreshingly simple: Smitham Downs Road to the A237, then straight along Smitham Bottom Lane and Woodcote Road through Wallington. If the gearbox is slipping or will not select a gear, collection and delivery can be arranged rather than tackling hills with it. Every repair is quoted in writing before work starts and carries our 3-month workmanship warranty.
