Small turbos and slow traffic around Tooting Broadway
Many of the cars parked along Tooting's Victorian terraces are small hatchbacks with 1.0 or 1.2-litre turbo engines. They're efficient, but the turbo spins at very high speed and doesn't tolerate dust well. That makes the humble air filter more important on these cars than it looks. A cheap filter that doesn't seal properly in the housing can, over time, let enough grit through to wear the turbo's compressor. The engine management will cope with a slightly dirty filter; it can't compensate for dust getting past it.
The driving doesn't help. Tooting Broadway, where the A24 meets the A217, is congested for much of the day, and Upper Tooting Road and Tooting High Street are red routes with bus lanes and a 20mph limit. Cars spend long stretches crawling beside buses, and the air at that level carries a lot of soot and road dust. Traffic to Springfield University Hospital and St George's adds to it, and taxis and private-hire cars working the area pile on the miles.
With the ULEZ covering Tooting, most local cars are now compliant models their owners want to keep for a good while. We fit OE-equivalent filters matched to the original's size and seal, clean any debris from the airbox, and check that the lid clips and intake hoses are sound. Cars parked near the Commons and Tooting Bec Stadium can collect leaves in the intake during autumn, and we clear those while the filter is out.
The drive is about 18 minutes: Mitcham Road east from the Broadway, through Figges Marsh and round Mitcham, then Carshalton Road south into Hackbridge. As it's a short job, it's best combined with a service or MOT, or we can arrange collection if parking restrictions make it awkward to leave home. You'll have a written quote before we start, and a 3-month workmanship warranty.
