Older compliant cars, the A217 and the six-way roundabout
Across Rosehill and the St Helier estate there are plenty of older, hard-working cars: petrol hatchbacks from the late 2000s, Euro 6 diesels and people carriers that have done plenty of miles. Since the ULEZ expansion in August 2023, a compliant car like that is worth keeping on the road, and the air filter is one of the cheapest ways to protect the parts that would make it uneconomic to repair, such as the turbo and the airflow sensor.
Driving here swings between two extremes. The Rose Hill roundabout, on the line of the old London to Brighton road marked by the 1745 milestone on the hill, queues heavily at peak times, with buses and constant lane changing, so engines spend time idling in exhaust. Then the A217 Reigate Avenue opens up into a fast dual carriageway towards Cheam, where the engine is pulling hard and gulping air. A restricted filter is felt most in that second situation, when you're merging and need the car to respond.
On older cars the filter isn't the only thing to look at. We check the airbox for cracks, make sure the lid clips still hold and inspect the rubber intake hoses, which can harden and split with age and let dust in after the filter. If we find oil in the housing, it usually points to worn breather components, and we'll explain that before doing anything about it. Cars parked by Thomas Wall Park can also collect leaves in the intake, which we clear out.
From the roundabout, head down Wrythe Lane past St Helier Hospital to Wrythe Green, then Nightingale Road and Hackbridge Road into Hackbridge, about 9 minutes. If you'd rather not drive through the hospital traffic, we can arrange collection and delivery. Every job starts with a written quote and carries a 3-month workmanship warranty.
