Keeping ULEZ-compliant cars healthy in Carshalton Village
Since the ULEZ reached Carshalton in August 2023, a compliant car has become something worth looking after rather than replacing. A lot of the cars we see from Carshalton Village and the streets around Little Holland House are older petrol models or Euro 6 diesels their owners intend to keep for years. On those engines the air filter is one of the cheapest parts, yet it protects some of the most expensive ones, namely the turbocharger and the mass airflow sensor.
The A232 through the village is narrow and slow, with buses, parked cars and pedestrians around the ponds, so a lot of Carshalton mileage is done at low speed in other vehicles' exhaust. Up on Wrythe Lane, traffic for St Helier Hospital crawls for much of the day. None of that will ruin a filter quickly, but it does mean the element loads up with soot and fine dust, and a car doing mostly short local trips may reach its time limit before its mileage one.
Our job is to make sure the filter still does what it should. We check the pleats for clogging and tears, clean out the airbox and look at the seal, because a filter that lets air bypass it protects nothing. If we find oil in the intake, that points to the crankcase breather, which matters on an older diesel you're keeping for compliance. We'll explain what we find rather than simply fitting parts.
The drive is short: West Street past Carshalton station, through The Wrythe to Hackbridge Road and London Road, around 5 minutes. Most people wait, as the job normally takes under half an hour. If you'd rather not, we can collect the car and bring it back. Every job starts with a written quote, and the fitting carries a 3-month workmanship warranty.
