Lorry dust on Beddington Lane and what it does to air filters
Beddington Lane is one of the dustiest roads our customers drive. HGVs, skip lorries and vans shuttle to the industrial estates, recycling yards and the energy recovery facility all day, and the grit they kick up is exactly what an engine air filter is there to catch. If you drive a van for work along that corridor, or simply cut through towards Mitcham Common, your filter will load up faster than the mileage alone suggests.
It isn't only the industrial end. The A232 Croydon Road queues at peak times towards the Purley Way junction, and at weekends traffic for IKEA Croydon and Valley Retail Park backs up onto the approach roads. Sitting behind diesel lorries and buses in slow traffic means the engine is drawing in soot-laden air for long periods. Closer to Beddington village, cars parked near the River Wandle and Beddington Park can pick up leaves and seed heads in the airbox inlet during autumn.
A clogged filter on a modern engine rarely hurts fuel economy, but it does blunt performance and, if it splits or stops sealing, lets fine dust through to the turbo and the mass airflow sensor. That's why we don't just swap the element. We clear debris from the airbox, check the lid clips and seal, and look for oil or water in the intake. On a working van, we'll also tell you honestly whether the filter could last to the next service or should come out now.
From Beddington village it's roughly 6 minutes to us: Church Road to the A232, west to Wallington Green, then north up London Road to Soho Mills. Most filters take 15 to 30 minutes, so you can wait, or have it done alongside a service to save a second trip. You get a written quote first, and our 3-month workmanship warranty covers the fitting.
