AdBlue Repairs for Coulsdon Diesels on the Hills and the A23

Coulsdon diesels work hard on the climbs off Chipstead Valley Road and the run down the A23, and that shows in how much AdBlue they use. We're about 17 minutes north in Hackbridge and can tell a genuine fault from normal consumption.

Hills, heavy loads and how much AdBlue you should use

Drivers in Coulsdon often ask whether their car is using too much AdBlue. The honest answer is that consumption varies with how hard the engine works. Climbing out of the valley along Chipstead Valley Road, pulling a loaded SUV up to Old Coulsdon or towing at the weekend all raise NOx output, and the system doses more fluid to deal with it. A car that mostly potters at 20mph on residential roads will use noticeably less.

So a rising figure on its own isn't a fault. What does point to one is a sudden change: a tank that empties far faster than it used to under the same driving, or white crystals around the pipes and the dosing module under the car. That usually means a leak. The opposite, a gauge that barely moves, can mean the system isn't dosing at all, and the car will usually log an SCR efficiency fault before long.

We look at the logged dosing quantities alongside the tank level and the NOx sensor readings, which tells us whether the system is doing what it should for the way you drive. We check the lines, the tank connections and the injector seal for leaks, and test the pump and heater. You get a written quote before any repair, and the work is covered by a 3-month workmanship warranty.

From Coulsdon town centre the run is straightforward: Smitham Downs Road to the A237, then straight up through Woodcote and Wallington to Hackbridge, about 4.5 miles. If you commute from Coulsdon Town station or live out past Grange Park and can't spare the time, we can arrange collection from home, which also saves a drive if the countdown is already showing. Coulsdon is inside the ULEZ right up to the Surrey boundary, so a healthy Euro 6 diesel is worth looking after.

AdBlue System Repairs: what’s involved

Many modern diesels, and nearly all built to the later Euro 6 standards, use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. AdBlue, a mix of urea and deionised water, is pumped from its own tank and sprayed into the exhaust by a dosing module ahead of the SCR catalyst. There it turns harmful NOx into nitrogen and water. NOx sensors before and after the catalyst tell the ECU whether the system is working, and a quality sensor checks the fluid in the tank.

Because the system is part of the car's emissions approval, the law requires it to enforce itself. If the ECU detects a fault, low fluid or poor-quality AdBlue, it shows a warning and starts a countdown. When that reaches zero, the engine will not restart once switched off. Common faults include crystallised AdBlue blocking the dosing module, failed pumps and tank heaters, and NOx sensor failures.

Signs of an AdBlue system fault

AdBlue or SCR warning light

A warning that stays on after the tank has been topped up points to a system fault rather than low fluid.

No-start countdown

A message such as 'engine start not possible in X miles' means the ECU has detected a fault. Once it reaches zero the engine will not restart after being switched off.

Engine management light

NOx sensor, dosing and SCR efficiency faults usually also light the engine management light and store emissions-related codes.

White crystals around the filler or exhaust

AdBlue leaves white urea crystals as it dries. Deposits around the dosing module, pipes or tank point to a leak or a blocked injector.

AdBlue use too low or too high

If the tank level barely drops, the system may not be dosing. If it empties much faster than usual, look for a leak.

Faults in cold weather

AdBlue freezes at around minus 11°C and relies on heaters in the tank and lines. A heater failure often shows up as a warning on cold mornings.

Wrong fluid in the tank

Diesel, water or screenwash in the AdBlue tank, or AdBlue in the fuel tank, needs dealing with before the car is driven any further.

When should it be done?

Book in as soon as an AdBlue or SCR warning appears that topping up doesn't clear. Don't wait for the countdown to run out, as once it reaches zero the car will not restart and may need recovery. If the wrong fluid has gone into either tank, don't start the engine. AdBlue itself should be topped up with fluid meeting ISO 22241, and the tank refilled well before it runs low.

  • Any AdBlue or SCR warning that remains after topping up
  • As soon as a no-start countdown message appears
  • Emissions or NOx-related codes with the engine management light on
  • Visible white crystal deposits or leaks around the AdBlue system
  • Immediately if the wrong fluid has been put in either tank

How we repair an AdBlue system

  1. Check-in and historyWe ask when the warning appeared, how much mileage is left on any countdown, and whether the tank was recently filled and with what.
  2. Diagnostic scanWe read codes from the engine and SCR control modules and review NOx sensor readings, dosing quantities, tank level, temperature and quality data.
  3. Test the systemWe carry out the manufacturer's dosing quantity test, check pump pressure and heater operation, and inspect the dosing module, lines and wiring.
  4. Check fluid qualityWe check the AdBlue for contamination or dilution. Contaminated fluid has to be drained and the system flushed before new parts are fitted.
  5. Quote and repairWe explain the fault and give you a written quote. Once approved we clear crystallisation or replace the dosing module, pump, heater, sensor or wiring as needed.
  6. Adaptations and resetsWe carry out the adaptations the car requires after the repair, such as resetting learned values and running the dosing test again.
  7. Road testWe road test long enough for the SCR system to monitor itself, then rescan to confirm the warning and countdown have cleared.

Parts we fit

AdBlue parts have to match the vehicle's emissions system exactly, so we fit OE or OE-equivalent components, such as Bosch or Continental dosing and sensor parts where those are the original fitment. On many cars the pump, heater and level sender are built into the tank as a single unit. We only use AdBlue meeting ISO 22241. We do not fit AdBlue emulators or delete software, which are illegal for road use.

  • OE or OE-equivalent AdBlue dosing modules (injectors)
  • Upstream and downstream NOx sensors
  • AdBlue pumps, heaters and tank modules
  • AdBlue quality and level sensors
  • ISO 22241-compliant AdBlue fluid

How long it takes

2–5 hours

Diagnosis and simpler repairs such as a sensor or dosing module are often done in a day. Tank module replacements, contaminated systems or parts on order can take longer, and time varies a lot between makes.

What’s included

  • Diagnostic scan of engine and SCR systems
  • Dosing test and system inspection
  • AdBlue quality check
  • Written quote before any repair
  • Adaptations and fault codes cleared after the repair
  • Road test and final scan

About Coulsdon

Coulsdon is a town on the chalk hills of the North Downs at the southern edge of Greater London, with Old Coulsdon on the hill to the east being London's southernmost settlement. The town centre grew up in the valley of Smitham Bottom after the railway arrived, and the surrounding streets are mainly inter-war and post-war semis and detached houses, with newer homes on the former Cane Hill Hospital site. It feels semi-rural, with Farthing Downs and the commons on the doorstep, and is popular with families and commuters; driving means hills, winding lanes and the A23 relief road taking through traffic past the town centre.

AdBlue System Repairs in Coulsdon: your questions answered

Does towing a caravan from Coulsdon use more AdBlue?

Generally, yes. Heavier loads mean more NOx from the engine, so the system doses more to clean it up, which is normal. A sudden jump without any change in how you use the car is what we'd want to investigate.

My car gets through AdBlue quickly on trips down the A23 to the M25. Is that a problem?

Steady driving at higher load can use more AdBlue than town driving, so some increase is expected. If the tank is emptying far faster than your handbook suggests, or you can see white deposits underneath, we'll check the system for a leak.

The countdown appeared while I was out on the Surrey side. Can I get home to Coulsdon?

Usually, yes. The countdown shows a distance before the no-start, and the engine keeps running until you switch it off at zero. Drive home or straight to us without unnecessary stops, and if it does reach zero we can arrange recovery.

Can you delete or disable the AdBlue system?

No. AdBlue delete software and emulators are illegal for road use because they remove part of the car's emissions control. They can also affect insurance and cause problems at MOT. We repair the system so it works as designed.

I've topped up but the light is still on. Why?

Some cars need a short drive or a few ignition cycles to recognise a refill. If the warning stays, the fault is usually in the dosing module, pump, heater, NOx sensors or quality sensor, and needs a diagnostic check.

I put AdBlue in the fuel tank. What should I do?

Don't start the engine. AdBlue can damage the fuel pump and injectors, so the tank and fuel lines need draining and flushing. The same applies to diesel in the AdBlue tank, which damages the pump and seals.

What causes crystallisation?

AdBlue leaves urea crystals behind as it dries, especially around the hot dosing module. Leaks, lots of short trips and a dosing module that isn't spraying properly all make it worse. Deposits can block the nozzle and trigger SCR efficiency faults.

Can I use any AdBlue?

Use fluid meeting ISO 22241, sold as AdBlue or diesel exhaust fluid. Never dilute it with water. Keep it sealed and out of heat, because old or contaminated fluid can trigger quality sensor warnings.
