Beddington Lane vans, the ULEZ and the AdBlue countdown
Beddington sits inside the London-wide ULEZ, so the diesels that still make sense here are mostly Euro 6, and a large share of those use AdBlue and an SCR catalyst to meet that standard. That's especially true of the vans and pickups working the industrial estates along Beddington Lane. When the SCR system develops a fault, the ECU won't simply let it slide. It starts a countdown, and once that reaches zero the engine will not restart, which for a van driver means a lost working day rather than a light to ignore.
The way vehicles are used around here matters. A van that shuttles between the recycling sites and depots near the Beddington Lane tram stop spends a lot of time idling behind lorries, then switches off and restarts many times a day. The dosing module only sprays once the exhaust is hot enough, and repeated heat soak after switching off is a common cause of urea crystals building up around the injector tip. Family diesels doing short runs along Plough Lane towards Roundshaw or into Wallington suffer the same thing on a smaller scale.
When the vehicle comes in, we read the SCR control module as well as the engine ECU, run the dosing quantity test and check the fluid's concentration. Crystallisation can often be cleared if it's caught early, but a pump, heater or NOx sensor that has failed electrically needs replacing, and we'll show you the readings that point to it. You get a written quote before we touch anything.
Beddington is about 1.6 miles from us, so the drive is short: Church Road to Croydon Road, then up London Road to Soho Mills. If the countdown is already low, avoid switching off more than you need to on the way. Drivers on the Hackbridge side near BedZED are only a couple of minutes from the workshop. Repairs are covered by our 3-month workmanship warranty.
