Finding the source of an oil leak
Oil leaks are difficult to trace visually — oil wicks along surfaces and runs downward, so the puddle on the ground may be far from the actual leak source. We clean the engine thoroughly, inject UV dye into the oil, and use an ultraviolet light to trace the exact source after a short drive. This eliminates guesswork.
Common oil leak sources
Rocker cover gasket: the most common — the rubber gasket hardens and cracks with age. Oil drips down the engine side or burns on the exhaust manifold. Sump gasket: visible as oil dripping directly below the engine. Cam seal: at the front of the engine inside the timing cover. Rear main seal: at the rear of the crankshaft where it exits the block. Timing cover gasket: a source of significant leaks on high-mileage engines.
How serious is an oil leak?
Any leak should be monitored and repaired. A significant leak that goes unaddressed leads to the engine running low on oil — engine damage from oil starvation is catastrophic.
