Keeping a ULEZ-compliant BMW going in Carshalton
Since the ULEZ reached Carshalton in August 2023, a good many owners have decided to hang on to the compliant car they already have rather than replace it. A petrol BMW from the mid-2000s onwards will usually meet the standard, which makes a well-kept 3 Series or X1 worth looking after properly. Our approach for older BMWs is to deal with the known weak points before they strand you: oil filter housing and rocker cover gaskets, the electric water pump on engines that have one, and the front suspension arms.
Carshalton's own roads add their share of wear. The A232 past the ponds and All Saints Church is narrow and slow, with buses, pedestrians and parked cars, so it is all stop-start low-speed work. Park Hill climbs steeply to Carshalton Beeches, which asks a lot of the brakes on the way back down. Between them, pads and discs tend to go before the mileage says they should, and we look at them closely at each visit rather than relying on the dashboard alone.
At the service itself, the car is scanned, the due CBS items are carried out with oil carrying the correct BMW Longlife approval, and each item is reset individually. If the MOT is due at the same time we can book both together, so the car is only off the road once. Anything we find beyond the service is explained and quoted in writing, and it is your decision whether it is done now or planned for later.
The drive is short and straightforward. Head up West Street past Carshalton station, along Wrythe Lane briefly, then Nightingale Road and Hackbridge Road into Hackbridge, where Soho Mills sits on London Road. Allow around five minutes, a little more when Wrythe Lane is busy with St Helier Hospital traffic. Collection from home can be arranged if you would rather not bring it yourself.
