Why headlights yellow and oxidise
Headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic coated with a UV-resistant lacquer. UV radiation breaks down this lacquer over time — the polycarbonate then oxidises and turns yellow or hazy. Yellow headlights can reduce light output by up to 70% — a serious safety issue for night driving.
The restoration process
We wet-sand the lens through increasingly fine grades to remove the oxidised layer. Machine polish restores optical clarity. UV-resistant coating is then applied to protect the newly clear polycarbonate. A properly restored and coated lens can remain clear for 3–5 years.
