When a Beddington work van loses its engine
Beddington has more working vehicles than most of the area, and that shapes the engine failures we see. Vans and pickups running up and down Beddington Lane to the industrial estates and recycling sites spend their lives loaded, idling in queues behind HGVs and waiting at the tram crossing. Long idling and heavy short trips are hard on oil, and a diesel that misses an oil change or two can end up with worn bearings and a knock from the bottom end. For a van that is otherwise sound, a replacement engine is often the cheapest way back to work.
On the residential side, Croydon Road carries steady traffic between Wallington and Waddon, and it queues towards the Purley Way junction and the retail parks around IKEA and Valley Retail Park. A car whose cooling fan has quietly failed will manage at speed, then overheat in exactly that kind of queue. Keep driving once the gauge climbs and the head can warp or crack. If you stop quickly, the fix is often a head gasket rather than a whole engine, which is why we always test before recommending anything.
Since the ULEZ came to Beddington, a compliant van or car has real value, and many owners would rather replace an engine than the vehicle. Fitting an engine with the same engine code keeps the vehicle as it was built. We source reconditioned or good used units, transfer the ancillaries, renew the seals that are easy to reach with the engine out, and on used engines of unknown history we recommend a new cambelt kit.
From Beddington village the route runs west on Croydon Road past Beddington Park and the River Wandle to Wallington, then north on London Road to us, about 1.6 miles. A car with a failed engine should not be driven, so we can recover it. You get a written quote before any work, and our labour carries a 3-month workmanship warranty.
