Interim, full, and major service — what is the difference?

An interim service is an oil and filter change with a 50-point safety inspection. It is designed for drivers who cover more than 12,000 miles per year and is recommended every 6 months or 6,000 miles. A full service adds spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, cabin filter and a full fluid check to the interim service. It is the standard annual service for most drivers. A major service adds coolant replacement, timing belt or chain inspection, gearbox and differential fluid check, and a comprehensive drivetrain check. It is recommended every 2–3 years or 24,000–36,000 miles depending on the manufacturer schedule.

What oil does my car need?

Engine oil specification is critical. Using the wrong grade causes increased wear, failed emissions tests, DPF blockage on diesel cars, and in some cases voids the manufacturer warranty. BMW requires Longlife LL-04 or LL-01 5W-30. VW Group cars require 504.00/507.00 5W-30 (diesel) or 502.00 (petrol). Mercedes requires 229.5 or 229.51. Ford requires WSS-M2C913 or WSS-M2C950. We check the specification for your exact engine code before ordering oil — not just the model.

Why does servicing matter?

Engine oil degrades over time and mileage. The base oil breaks down and the additive package depletes. Degraded oil loses viscosity, cannot lubricate effectively at high temperature, and causes accelerated wear on bearings, camshafts, and timing chain tensioners. The 15-minute oil change is the most cost-effective maintenance you can carry out on any vehicle. A car that has never been serviced will have measurably more engine wear than a correctly serviced equivalent.

What is included in the 50 and 75 point inspection?

The 50-point inspection in the interim service covers: brake pad and disc condition, tyre tread depth and condition, all fluid levels, wiper condition, all external lights, exhaust condition, suspension visual check, steering check, and battery test. The 75-point inspection in the full service adds: detailed brake measurement, drivetrain check including CV boots and driveshafts, detailed suspension and steering component inspection, cooling system pressure test, and charging system test.

Stamping the service history

A stamped service history book increases the resale value of every vehicle. A car with a full service history is worth meaningfully more than an identical car with no history — studies consistently show the difference at between £500 and £2,000 depending on the vehicle. We stamp the manufacturer service book with the service date, mileage, and our stamp. A digital service record is also emailed to you after every service.

Do I have to use a main dealer to keep my warranty?

No. Under UK law (retained from EU block exemption regulations) you are entitled to have your vehicle serviced by any competent garage using parts that meet manufacturer specification without voiding your warranty. The manufacturer must prove that the independent garage caused the fault — the burden of proof is on them, not on you. We use manufacturer-specification oil and OEM-equivalent parts at every service.

Car Servicing in South London — Questions Answered

Common questions about car servicing at KITH Cars Garage, Hackbridge.

How often should I service my car?

Most manufacturers recommend every 10,000–12,500 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. High-mileage drivers (over 12,000 miles per year) should consider an interim service every 6 months to maintain oil quality between annual services.

What is included in an oil change?

Engine oil drained, new oil filter fitted, new engine oil filled to the correct level and specification for the engine. Oil level confirmed on the dipstick or electronic indicator before handover. Includes a fluid top-up check.

Can I get a service without a service book?

Yes. If you do not have a manufacturer service book, we maintain a digital service record which is stored against your vehicle registration. This provides a documented history even without a physical book.

Do you reset the service indicator after a service?

Yes. All service indicators and oil life monitors are reset using our diagnostic equipment after every service.

Does the price include oil?

Yes. Service prices at KITH Cars include the correct manufacturer-specification oil and a new oil filter. There are no hidden charges for oil type or volume.

What happens if you find something during the service?

Any additional items found during the inspection are listed on a written advisory report with our recommended action and estimated cost. We call you to discuss before carrying out any additional work.

Can I wait while my car is serviced?

Yes. An interim service takes approximately 1.5–2 hours. A full service takes 2.5–3 hours. We have a waiting area at the garage.

Do you service Mercedes, BMW, Audi and other prestige brands?

Yes. We service all makes including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Land Rover, Jaguar, and all other prestige and mainstream brands. We use the correct manufacturer-specification oil for each engine.

Will an independent service void my new car warranty?

No. UK law protects your right to use an independent garage for scheduled servicing without voiding the manufacturer warranty, provided the correct oil and service items are used. This right applies to all new car warranties.

Do you service electric vehicles?

Yes. EVs do not require oil changes but still need an annual service: cabin filter, brake inspection, tyre check, fluid level check (brake fluid, washer fluid, coolant where applicable), battery health check, and a full vehicle health scan. EV service from £79.

What is a DSG or automatic gearbox service?

A gearbox fluid and filter change for dual-clutch or automatic gearboxes. Recommended every 40,000 miles. Not included in a standard service but can be added at the time of booking. Prevents clutch judder and mechatronic faults.

Can you service my car on a Saturday?

Yes. We are open Monday to Saturday 8am–8pm.

What fluid top-ups are included in a service?

Coolant, screen wash, power steering fluid (if hydraulic), brake fluid check. Brake fluid replacement is carried out where the moisture content test shows it is above the recommended threshold.

Does a full service include spark plugs?

Yes. Spark plug replacement is included in a full service. We use the correct plugs for your engine — copper, iridium or platinum as specified by the manufacturer.

What is the difference between a full service and a minor service?

Full service and interim service are different names used by different manufacturers. An interim/minor service is oil, filter and safety check. A full service adds spark plugs, fuel filter and a more detailed inspection. A major service adds coolant, timing belt inspection and drivetrain check.

Do you service vans and commercial vehicles?

Yes. We service all light commercial vehicles — Ford Transit, VW Transporter, Mercedes Sprinter, Renault Trafic, Vauxhall Vivaro, Citroën Berlingo, Fiat Ducato and all others.

Can you collect my car for a service?

Yes. Collection and delivery is available across South London including Croydon, Sutton, Mitcham, Wallington, Carshalton, Wimbledon, Streatham and surrounding areas. Ask when booking.

How do I know my car needs a service?

Service interval warning light or message on the dashboard, 12 months since the last service, 10,000–12,500 miles since the last service, oil looking very dark and dirty on the dipstick, or the service book showing the service is due.

Is there a stamp for European service books?

Yes. We stamp all service books — UK and European format.

Do you use genuine oil filters?

We use OEM-equivalent oil filters from MANN, Mahle, Bosch or the equivalent to the vehicle's manufacturer-recommended specification. These are the same quality as dealer-fitted parts at a lower cost.

Can I supply my own oil for the service?

Yes, but we must verify that it meets the manufacturer's specification for your engine. Using the wrong oil, even at your request, can cause problems that we would need to document.

What is included in a major service?

Everything in the full service plus: coolant replacement, timing belt or chain inspection with recommendation, gearbox and differential fluid inspection, brake fluid replacement, comprehensive drivetrain check including driveshafts, CV joints and boots, exhaust check, and all ancillary belts inspection.

Can you carry out fleet servicing for multiple vehicles?

Yes. We offer fleet servicing contracts for businesses with multiple vehicles. Priority scheduling, consolidated invoicing, and fleet service records are available. Call 020 4629 9469 to discuss your fleet requirements.

Do you service diesel vehicles differently?

Yes. Diesel servicing uses the correct diesel-specification oil (typically 5W-30 DPF-compatible), and our inspection includes DPF and EGR system condition check, AdBlue level check (where applicable), and fuel filter replacement at the correct interval.

Can a service prevent timing chain failure?

On engines known for timing chain issues (BMW N47, VW 1.2 TSI, Renault 1.2 TCe, Peugeot 1.2 PureTech), using the correct oil at the correct interval is one of the most important preventative measures. Using the wrong oil or extending oil changes reduces the lubrication to the tensioner and accelerates wear.
