Timing Chain Rattle — Causes, Symptoms and What To Do
A rattling noise from the top of the engine on cold start that quietens within a minute is one of the most recognisable symptoms of a failing timing chain. This article explains what causes timing chain rattle, which engines are most affected, and what you should do if you hear it.
What causes timing chain rattle?
The timing chain rattle is caused by a lack of tension on the chain. The chain tensioner — a hydraulically operated mechanism that maintains constant pressure on the chain — fails to maintain sufficient pressure. On cold start, before oil pressure is fully established, the tensioner cannot hold the chain taught and it slackens against the chain guides. The slapping of the chain against the guide produces the characteristic rattle. As oil pressure rises within 30–60 seconds, the tensioner re-pressurises and the chain tightens again — the rattle stops.
Which engines are most affected?
BMW N47 2.0d (2007–2013): fitted to 118d, 120d, 318d, 320d, 520d, X1 20d. The chain is at the rear of the engine, making replacement a major job. Mercedes OM651 2.0/2.2 CDI (2008–2016): fitted to A, C, E Class, Sprinter and Vito. The balance shaft module fails alongside the chain. VW 1.2 TSI (2007–2016): Golf Mk6, Polo, Octavia, Fabia. Plastic tensioner cracks. Renault 1.2 TCe: Megane, Captur, Clio. Same plastic tensioner design. Peugeot/Citroën 1.2 PureTech (pre-2018): C3, 208, 308, Berlingo. Same PSA Group tensioner issue.
How urgent is it?
Very. A cold-start rattle that disappears after 30–60 seconds means the tensioner is already failing. At this stage the chain is wearing every time you start the engine. Once the chain stretches enough to jump a tooth on the sprocket, timing errors cause severe misfiring and the engine may stop. On an interference engine — which is the majority of modern cars — a jumped chain bends valves and destroys the engine. The difference in repair cost between a timely chain replacement and a chain that has jumped is typically £700 vs £3,000–£5,000.
Can I keep driving?
For a short period on short journeys at low speeds, yes. At motorway speeds with high engine loads, the risk of chain failure is significantly higher. If you hear a timing chain rattle, book an inspection immediately.
How is it diagnosed?
A cold-start rattle that stops as the engine warms is the most reliable indicator. Fault codes P0008, P0016, P0017 (camshaft/crankshaft correlation errors) often appear alongside the rattle but can also appear before the noise develops. A camera scope down the oil filler can show chain wear directly on some engines.
Common questions
How much does timing chain replacement cost?
From £550 at KITH Cars Garage including the full chain kit and oil change. BMW N47 from £950 due to the engine lowering required. Mercedes OM651 from £1,100 including balance shaft module.
Is a timing chain rattle always dangerous?
Yes — a rattle indicates the tensioner is failing. It should be investigated immediately regardless of how brief or quiet the rattle is.
Does the timing chain need replacing at a set interval?
No — unlike a cambelt, the timing chain is not replaced on a set schedule. It is replaced when it shows signs of wear or tensioner failure.
