DPF Warning Light — What It Means and What To Do
The DPF warning light is one of the most misunderstood dashboard warnings on modern diesel cars. This guide explains what the DPF warning light means, why it comes on, and what you should — and should not — do when it appears.
What is the DPF?
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a ceramic honeycomb filter in the exhaust system that captures soot particles produced during diesel combustion. Soot accumulates in the filter during normal driving. When the soot loading reaches a threshold, the engine management system initiates a regeneration cycle — it raises the exhaust temperature by injecting additional fuel late in the combustion cycle to burn off the soot. On a petrol car, this happens automatically and invisibly on motorway drives.
Why does the DPF warning light come on?
The DPF warning light illuminates when the soot loading in the filter has reached a level where the automatic regeneration cycle has failed to clear it. This almost always happens because the car has not been driven at sufficient speed for long enough to allow the exhaust temperature to reach the regeneration threshold. Urban stop-start driving, short journeys, and slow road driving are the main causes.
What to do when the DPF light comes on
If the light is amber and no other warning lights are present, try a sustained motorway or dual carriageway run at 60mph or above for at least 20–30 minutes. Do not switch the engine off during this run. On many vehicles this will allow the DPF to complete a passive regeneration cycle and the light will extinguish within a few days.
When to bring it to a garage
If the amber DPF light has been on for more than a few days without clearing, or if a red DPF warning appears, or if the engine enters limp mode (restricted power), bring the vehicle to a garage for a forced regeneration. A diagnostic scan will show the DPF soot loading percentage — above 60% a forced regeneration at the garage is required.
What is a forced DPF regeneration?
A forced regeneration uses diagnostic equipment to command the engine management system into an active high-temperature burn cycle. The process takes 20–45 minutes with the engine running at the garage. The exhaust temperature reaches 600°C+ during the process. The soot loading percentage is monitored throughout.
Common questions
Can I drive with a DPF warning light?
A steady amber DPF light means try a motorway run first. A red DPF light or limp mode means stop and call a garage.
How much does DPF cleaning cost?
Forced regeneration at KITH Cars: £250. Professional off-car cleaning: from £350. DPF replacement if uncleanable: from £800.
Can a diesel car be used for short journeys?
A diesel car used exclusively for short urban journeys will experience repeated DPF problems. A petrol or hybrid is a more appropriate choice for this use pattern.
