Short, slow Streatham trips and the MOT emissions test
Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill are 20mph red routes crowded with buses, and the side streets from Streatham Hill down to Streatham Vale are narrow and increasingly covered by parking zones. It all adds up to short, slow journeys. For a diesel, that means the particulate filter rarely gets the sustained run it needs to burn off soot. The MOT fails any diesel with a particulate filter that shows visible smoke, and the tester also looks for signs the filter has been removed or tampered with, which is a fail too.
Petrol cars aren't immune. A catalytic converter that seldom reaches working temperature can struggle, and a faulty oxygen sensor or a misfire pushes emissions up. An engine management light that's on is a fail in itself, even if the car seems to run well. If your warning light has come on, it's better to have it diagnosed before the MOT so you know what you're facing.
Lambeth's parking zones, including the Streatham Vale zones that run from midday to 2pm on weekdays, make it awkward to leave a car anywhere for long. If you live near Streatham Hill station or the edge of Tooting Bec Common, it may be easier for us to collect the car, test it and bring it back. If it fails, we'll call you with a plain explanation and a written quote before doing any repair, and repairs carry our 3-month workmanship warranty.
Driving yourself, take Mitcham Lane from St Leonard's Church, through the Figges Marsh junction and Mitcham, then Cranmer Road and Carshalton Road south to Hackbridge, about 5.5 miles. The A23 Streatham High Road is best avoided at peak times. The test takes 45 to 60 minutes, and if the car stays with us for repairs, the partial retest within 10 working days is free.
