Class 4 MOTs for Croydon Drivers, Away from Purley Way Queues

Croydon cars rack up hard miles on Purley Way, Mitcham Road and the gyratories, and many are private-hire vehicles that can't afford a day off the road. We carry out Class 4 MOTs for £50, with no booking or admin fee on top, about 15 minutes away in Hackbridge.

Purley Way miles, private-hire cars and a quick Croydon MOT

The A23 Purley Way is the road most Croydon drivers know too well. Weekends and bank holidays bring queues around IKEA and Valley Park, and weekday traffic stops and starts at Fiveways and the Lombard roundabout. It's hard on brakes, and cars that do most of their miles on it often arrive at the MOT with thin pads, lipped discs or a brake warning light. If your car has been making a scraping or grinding noise, have it checked before the test, as metal-on-metal braking damages discs quickly.

A lot of Croydon cars are private-hire vehicles working the town centre and East Croydon at all hours, and for them a failed MOT means lost earnings. The test takes 45 to 60 minutes, common failures such as bulbs, wipers, pads and tyres can often be fixed the same day, and everything is quoted in writing first. Remember that any licensing inspection your vehicle needs for private hire is separate from the MOT, so passing one doesn't cover the other.

Around Broad Green, Wandle Park and the terraced streets off the A236, cars are parked tightly and knocked about. Mirrors get clipped and lamps cracked, and a mirror that's missing or so damaged the view is lost, or a rear lamp showing white light through a cracked lens, can fail. Older cars that have spent years on these roads also show wear in suspension bushes and springs. If the car fails and stays with us for repair, the partial retest within 10 working days is free.

The drive from the town centre is about 4.5 miles: over the Flyover to Fiveways, then Croydon Road through Waddon and Beddington, and right onto London Road at Wallington. If you're coming from Lloyd Park or Addiscombe, allow a little longer at peak times. Repairs carry our 3-month workmanship warranty.

MOT Testing: what’s involved

The MOT is the annual legal check that a vehicle meets minimum road safety and environmental standards. It is required once a car is three years old, then every year. The test covers brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, seatbelts, visibility, the body and structure, and exhaust emissions. It is a check of condition on the day, not a guarantee of the car's condition for the year ahead, and it does not look inside the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Defects are graded as minor, major or dangerous. Minor defects are recorded but the car still passes. A major or dangerous defect is a fail. Advisories are items to keep an eye on, such as tyres close to the legal limit. Class 4 covers cars, and vans and other goods vehicles up to 3,000kg design gross weight.

Common reasons cars fail the MOT

Lights and signalling

Blown bulbs, cloudy or misaimed headlamps and faulty indicators are among the most common failures. Most are quick and cheap to fix before the test.

Tyres

Tread below 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, cuts, bulges or exposed cords are a fail. A tyre pressure monitoring warning light on cars first used from 1 January 2012 also fails.

Brakes

Worn pads or discs, uneven braking side to side, a weak handbrake, or a brake or ABS warning light on the dash will fail the test.

Suspension

Broken coil springs, worn ball joints, split bushes and leaking shock absorbers are frequent failures, especially on cars that see a lot of potholes.

Visibility and wipers

Chips or cracks in the driver's line of sight, worn wiper blades and an empty washer bottle can all cause a fail.

Emissions and warning lights

High exhaust emissions, visible smoke from a diesel with a particulate filter, or an engine management light that is on will fail the test.

Corrosion and structure

Excessive corrosion within 30cm of a load-bearing mounting, such as a suspension or seatbelt mounting, is a fail on older cars.

When is your MOT due?

A car's first MOT is due by the third anniversary of its registration, then every 3 months. The expiry date is on your last certificate and on the gov.uk MOT history service. You can have the test up to a month, minus a day, before the expiry date and keep the same renewal date, so booking early costs you nothing. Driving without a valid MOT is only allowed to a pre-booked test or to repairs needed to pass.

  • First MOT by the car's third anniversary of registration
  • Then every 3 months
  • Up to a month (minus a day) early without losing your renewal date
  • After fitting new lights, tyres or wipers, if the old ones were close to failing
  • Class 4 covers cars and goods vehicles up to 3,000kg design gross weight

How our MOT works

  1. Booking and check-inWe confirm the registration and the vehicle class, and note anything you are worried about. You can wait or leave the car with us.
  2. Visual and interior checksThe tester checks seatbelts, seats, mirrors, the horn, warning lights, the windscreen, wipers and washers, doors, the VIN and number plates.
  3. Lights and electricsEvery light is checked for operation, colour and condition, and headlamp aim is measured with a beam-setting unit.
  4. Brake testBraking performance and balance are measured on a roller brake tester, and pads, discs, pipes and hoses are inspected where they can be seen.
  5. Underside inspectionFrom underneath the tester checks steering, suspension, driveshafts, the exhaust, fuel lines and for corrosion in load-bearing areas.
  6. Emissions testPetrol cars have exhaust gases measured with a gas analyser, and diesels have a smoke test. The tester also checks for signs of a removed or tampered particulate filter.
  7. Result and paperworkThe result is recorded on the DVSA system straight away. You get the certificate or a list of failures and advisories with the defect category for each.
  8. Repairs and retestIf the car fails, we explain each item and give you a written quote. Once repairs are approved and done, the retest is handled under the DVSA rules.

Repairs after an MOT

The MOT itself involves no parts, but most failures are items we can fix on site, from bulbs and wiper blades to brakes and suspension. Any repair is quoted in writing before we start, and we fit OE or OE-equivalent parts, such as brake parts from suppliers like Brembo or TRW. Repairs carry our 3-month workmanship warranty.

  • Bulbs, wiper blades and number plate lamps
  • OE or OE-equivalent brake pads, discs and hoses
  • Suspension springs, drop links, ball joints and bushes
  • Tyres to the correct size, load and speed rating
  • Exhaust sections and emissions-related sensors

How long it takes

45–60 minutes

The test itself usually takes 45–60 minutes. If the car fails, repair time depends on what is needed and whether parts are in stock; many common failures are fixed the same day.

What’s included

  • Full Class 4 MOT test to the DVSA inspection manual
  • Result recorded on the DVSA MOT system
  • Pass certificate or failure document with defect categories
  • Plain-English explanation of any failures and advisories
  • Written quote for any repairs before work starts

About Croydon

Croydon is one of the largest commercial centres in Greater London: a dense town centre of office towers, flats and shopping around East and West Croydon stations, ringed by Victorian and Edwardian terraces and leafier inter-war suburbs such as Addiscombe, Shirley and South Croydon. It is a busy place with a large commuting population thanks to fast trains to London Bridge and Victoria. Driving through the centre means multi-lane gyratories, the Croydon Flyover and Underpass, tram tracks and heavy traffic on the A23 and A232 corridors, while the side streets are mostly 20mph and tightly parked.

MOT Testing in Croydon: your questions answered

I drive private hire. Is the MOT the same as my licensing inspection?

No. The MOT is the standard DVSA roadworthiness test, and any inspection required for your private-hire licence is a separate check with its own rules. Keeping the car in MOT-passing condition helps with both, and we can fix most common defects on site.

Will a crack in the rear lamp fail my MOT?

It can, if the crack lets white light show to the rear or the lamp isn't working properly. Small cracks that don't affect the light may pass or be noted as an advisory. A replacement lens or lamp unit is often a quick job.

My car has a brake warning light on. Will it fail?

Yes. A brake warning light that's on is a fail, and so is an ABS warning light on cars that have one. Often it's low fluid or worn pads triggering a sensor, sometimes an ABS sensor fault. We can diagnose it before the test and quote for the repair.

Is the retest free?

If you leave the car with us for repair and it is retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free. If you take it away and bring it back within 10 working days, a partial retest fee may apply, except for certain minor items, such as lamps, wipers, mirrors, seatbelts or tyres, which are free if you return before the end of the next working day. After 10 working days a full test at the full fee is needed.

Can I drive my car if it fails?

If your current MOT hasn't expired and there are no dangerous defects, you can still drive it, but major defects should be fixed straight away. With a dangerous defect you must not drive it. If the MOT has expired, you can only drive to a pre-booked MOT or to have the failures repaired.

How early can I get my MOT done?

Up to a month, minus a day, before the current certificate expires, and the new certificate will still run to the same date the following year. Testing earlier than that is allowed, but the new certificate will then run for a year from the test date instead.

Does the MOT check the engine and gearbox?

No. The MOT doesn't cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. It checks emissions, fluid leaks and warning lights, but a clean pass doesn't mean the car doesn't need a service.

What is the difference between a minor and a major defect?

A minor defect has no significant effect on safety or the environment, so the car passes and the item is recorded. A major defect could affect safety or the environment and is a fail. A dangerous defect is an immediate risk, and the car should not be driven until it is fixed.
