Selespeed, narrow terraces and older Alfas in Thornton Heath
Thornton Heath's side streets, around Bensham Manor and off the A23 Thornton Road, are mostly narrow Victorian terraces with parking on both sides, leaving room for one car at a time. Driving there means constant stopping, pulling in to let others pass and moving off again. For an older Alfa Romeo with the Selespeed automated manual gearbox, that kind of low-speed start-stop work puts the system under steady load.
Selespeed uses a hydraulic pump and actuator to operate a conventional clutch and change gear. The pump and actuator are its known weak points. Owners may notice the pump running for longer than usual, slow or hesitant gear changes, a gearbox warning light, or in the worst case the car refusing to select a gear. Faults often show first in the kind of queues found near Thornton Heath Pond, or when moving off from a tight parking space.
We diagnose Selespeed faults with a scan and live data, check hydraulic pressure and fluid condition, and test the pump and actuator. Some faults are cured by fixing a leak, replacing the fluid or recalibrating the system. Others need a pump or actuator repair. We explain what we find and quote in writing, and we are honest about whether a repair makes sense for an older car's value. We also check the other known weak points on these cars, including front suspension wear, timing belt history and, on 1.9 JTDm diesels, the swirl flaps.
From Thornton Heath Pond, take Thornton Road to the Lombard roundabout and the A236 across Mitcham Common, then Carshalton Road to Hackbridge, about 15 minutes. If the gearbox will not select a gear, we can arrange collection, and if you are near Croydon University Hospital or the Pond, we can pick up from there. Any repair we carry out is covered for 3 months on workmanship.
